What it is

Positioning is where the market places you before you get to speak. It covers the category you occupy, who you've decided to serve, why a buyer would choose you over the alternatives, what you charge and why, and whether a cold stranger can understand all of that quickly.

Why it matters

Positioning is the foundation the other four systems inherit. If buyers can't classify you quickly, they classify you anyway — usually as a version of whatever they already know, which is rarely flattering. Weak positioning doesn't announce itself as a positioning problem. It shows up downstream as expensive leads, long sales cycles, discount pressure, and content that works hard without compounding.

Common symptoms

Deals that turn into price comparisons. Marketing generating volume that sales doesn't recognize as qualified. Different teams describing the company differently. An ICP that exists as a slide but not as a filter. "We help companies grow" as an outcome statement.
